Women's Volleyball Edged by Neumann, Widener in Close Matches
10/20/2012 — CHESTER, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's volleyball narrowly lost to Neumann University and Widener University on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match hosted by Widener at the Schwartz Center.
The Lady Lions lost 3-2 to Neumann and 3-1 to Widener.
In the Neumann match, Penn State Altoona lost the first set 25-21 before tying the match with a 25-20 win in the second set. Neumann took the third set 25-9, but the Lady Lions again bounced back with a 25-22 win in the fourth to force a fifth tiebreaker set. But Neumann claimed the match with a 15-9 tiebreaker win.
Mariah McDowell (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) led Penn State Altoona with 17 kills.
Becky Britton (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) added eight kills to go along with 13 digs, and Amanda Hammer (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) posted six kills and 16 digs.
Emily Frye (Etters, PA/Red Land) led the squad with 17 digs, and Marina Cotarelo (North Salem, NY/North Salem) put up a team-best 26 set assists.
In the Lady Lions' second match of the day, they got off to a good start with a 25-22 win in the first set. But Widener came back to win the next three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-19, and 25-22 to take the match.
McDowell had 13 kills and 13 digs, and Britton added 11 kills and 17 digs.
Frye posted a personal season-best 41 digs.
Cotarelo contributed 23 set assists.
