Lions Defeat Hilbert 3-1, Advancing to AMCC Semifinals
10/27/2012 — ALTOONA, Pa. - #4 seed Penn State Altoona men's soccer topped #5 seed Hilbert College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon at Spring Run Stadium in the first round of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead at 10:56 when Mike Robinson (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) took a long ball from Quinn Oyler (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) in the middle of the field, then sent a high-arcing shot overtop the leaping Hilbert goalkeeper and into the net.
Karl Stephan (Milford, NJ/Delaware Valley Regional) doubled Penn State Altoona's lead at 17:25. Robinson sent a ball into the box from the left side of the field, and Stephan headed it past the goalkeeper to make it 2-0.
Hilbert narrowed its deficit to 2-1 at 38:20 on a Jordan Lynch goal.
But Penn State Altoona swung momentum back in its favor midway through the second half, taking a 3-1 lead on Nick Holland's (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cedar Cliff) score. Holland took Stephan's pass between a pair of defenders in the box and chipped a shot past the goalkeeper.
Brandon Moss (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) made four saves for Penn State Altoona in the win.
The Lions will advance to the AMCC Semifinals, traveling to face top-seeded Penn State Behrend on Thursday, November 1. The game's start time is 1:30 PM.
