Big First Half Helps Redhawks Defeat Lions 65-42
12/5/2012 — PITTSBURGH, Pa. - La Roche College outscored Penn State Altoona men's basketball by 18 points in the first half of Wednesday night's game at Coach Scott Lang Court, propelling the Redhawks to a 65-42 win.
Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) led all scorers with 20 points, his highest point total of the season to date. He also tied the the team lead with five rebounds and blocked three shots.
John Brennan (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann-Goretti) added six points and grabbed four boards for the Lions.
La Roche opened the game on a 10-0 run until Gehret's layup at 13:35 put Penn State Altoona on the board.
Gehret's layup at 7:15 narrowed the home team's lead to just 19-15. Two minutes later, a Gehret foul shot kept the Lions within four points, 22-18.
But La Roche surged and ended the period on a momentum-changing 14-0 run, capped by Torin Smith's three-pointer with 20 seconds left, to hold a 36-18 lead by halftime.
The Redhawks opened the second half with a three-pointer, then continued to maintain their lead throughout the rest of the game.
