Lady Lions' Second Half Comeback Falls Short, Losing 71-63 at Hilbert
12/8/2012 — HAMBURG, N.Y. - Trailing by as many as 23 points to Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon, Penn State Altoona women's basketball staged a furious comeback attempt in the second half to get within two points of tying the game. But Hilbert held off the Lady Lions' rally, winning 71-63.
Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) posted a double-double for Penn State Altoona, scoring 16 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Her 16 points represent a career-high mark, while the 14 rebounds ties her career-best.
Alidia Strouse (State College, PA/State College) added 12 points and five rebounds for the Lady Lions, and Allison Edwards (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) scored 10 to go along with nine rebounds.
Hilbert opened the game strong, staking out a 21-4 lead at the 12:11 mark of the first half. At 7:54, the Lady Hawks led by 20 points, 29-9, after a pair of Natalie Whitman free throws. Whitman's fastbreak layup with 1:41 to go before halftime increased her team's lead to 42-19.
Whitman scored 20 points in the first half for Hilbert, shooting 7-for-8 from the field and 6-for-6 from the foul line.
The Lady Lions ended the first half on a 7-0 run to narrow their deficit to 42-26 at the intermission. In the final 1:28 of the period, Edwards scored two baskets and made a free throw while Corrigan made a layup.
Penn State Altoona continued to chip away at the Lady Hawks' lead in the second half. Strouse's layup at 14:10 brought Hilbert's lead down to single digits, 47-38.
Nearly six minutes later, Edwards made a three-pointer to bring her team to within eight points, 55-47.
At 6:15, Corrigan converted a three-point play to cut Hilbert's advantage to 58-54. Kylie O'Toole's (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) three-pointer at 5:36 brought the Lady Lions within two points, 59-57.
Edwards' jumper at 2:04 kept it a two point game, making it 63-61.
But Hilbert made eight free throws down the stretch and held Penn State Altoona two just two points in the final two minutes of the game to provide some insurance on the scoreboard and ice the win.
