Hawks Hand the Lions 72-61 Loss
12/8/2012 — HAMBURG, N.Y. - Jonathan Ross (Columbia, SC/Cross Creek) scored a career-high 29 points, but it was not enough to put Penn State Altoona men's basketball over the top against Hilbert College on Saturday afternoon, as the Hawks won 72-61 in the Hafner Recreation Center.
In addition to his career-best point total, Ross grabbed five rebounds and led Penn State Altoona with three steals.
Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) added 11 points for the Lions, and John Brennan (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann-Goretti) led all players with 12 rebounds and also contributed three assists.
Hilbert held a 5-0 lead at 15:22 of the first half, but Penn State Altoona went on a 7-2 run to tie the game on Ross' layup at 12:38.
Gehret's jump shot at 8:38 kept the score knotted, 14-14.
The Hawks flew off with a 6-0 run to take a 20-14 lead at 5:49, capped by CJ Hodge's fastbreak layup.
Penn State Altoona kept it close, as Gehret jumper at 1:38 made it a one point game, 24-23.
Down 30-25 at halftime, Gehret scored the first basket of the second half at 19:24, a layup that cut the Lions' deficit to three.
Hodge's jumper at 17:27 helped the Hawks to a seven point lead, but Ross converted a three point play 16:44 to bring Penn State Altoona back to within four, 34-30.
But a 9-0 Hilbert run provided the home team with more breathing room on the scoreboard, giving them a 43-30 lead at 13:27.
A Ross three-pointer at 6:19 helped whittle Hilbert's lead to 51-45. But Penn State Altoona did not get any closer throughout the rest of the game, as Hilbert increased its lead to as many as 15 points.
