Lions Defeated 75-56 by Medaille
1/5/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - An early lead slipped away from the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille College won 75-56 in the Adler Gym.
Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored a game-high and personal season-best 22 points for the Lions. He added five rebounds, four blocks, and three assists.
Jordan Wells (Columbia, MD/Atholton) contributed 11 points for Penn State Altoona, and John Brennan (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann-Goretti) led all players with 10 rebounds.
Penn State Altoona opened the game on a 7-2 run, capped by Brennan's layup at 16:42.
The Mavericks quickly tied the game at 7-7, then went on to take a 15-11 lead after Putter Brown's three-pointer at 12:45.
A 5-0 run by the Lions put them back in front. Gehret hit a pair of free throws, and Michael Wigfield (Flinton, PA/Glendale) added another foul shot before Wells' layup at 11:19 put Penn State Altoona ahead 16-15.
But Medaille reeled off a 9-0 run, then added to their lead en route to a 37-26 halftime advantage.
Gehret's layup at 19:18 was the first score of the second half, but the visitors grew their lead to as large as 22 points in the period to hold the Lions at bay.
Despite the two teams being nearly even in turnovers -- 13 for Penn State Altoona and 12 for Medaille -- the Mavericks capitalized better, holding a 15-3 advantage in points off turnovers.
