Behrend Clamps Down on Lions in 66-36 Loss for Penn State Altoona
1/6/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Behrend's top-ranked scoring defense kept the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team in check, defeating the Lions 66-36 in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference matchup in the Adler Gym on Sunday afternoon.
Behrend entered the game with the best scoring defense in the AMCC, allowing opponents to just 62.2 points per game.
John Brennan (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann-Goretti) had a game-high 10 rebounds for Penn State Altoona.
Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored nine points and tallied three assists. He also tied a career high in shots blocked with six.
Durant Harvin (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) added eight points and four rebounds for the Lions.
Penn State Altoona kept it close in the early stages of the first half. Brennan's layup at 16:20 kept Behrend's lead at four points, 8-4. Later, a pair of Jordan Wells (Columbia, MD/Atholton) free throws cut the visitors' lead to 21-15 at 7:37.
But by halftime, Behrend had built a 36-22 lead and continued to pile on in the second half, leading by as much as 30 points while limiting Penn State Altoona to 14 points and an 18.5% field goal percentage in the period.
Behrend's Russ Conley, the top scorer and rebounder in the conference, led his team with 24 points and nine rebounds. He helped his squad to a dominant performance in the paint, where they outscored the Lions 40-18.
