Lions Roll to 85-78 Win at D'Youville
1/12/2013 — BUFFALO, N.Y. - A strong shooting performance was key for Penn State Altoona men's basketball on Saturday, as the Lions beat Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College at the College Center Gym.
Penn State Altoona shot 55.2% from the field, including 60.0% in the second half to help maintain a lead.
Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) posted his second double-double of the year for the Lions, scoring a season-best 26 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. He also blocked a shot, setting a new Penn State Altoona men's basketball record for number of shots blocked in a single season with 45.
Mitch Moyer (Port Matilda, PA/Bald Eagle) scored a career-high 18 points, including a 3-for-6 performance from three-point range.
Jordan Stiles (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) also scored the best point total of his Lions career, putting up 14 points to go along with a trio of assists.
Durant Harvin (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) scored 13 points and dished out four assists.
D'Youville held a modest lead in the early stages of the game, going up 11-10 at 15:13 on Kyle Clarke's jumper.
Penn State Altoona answered with a 7-0 run. Gehret scored a layup and Harvin hit a jump shot ahead of Gehret's three-pointer at 13:39 that made it 17-11.
Two foul shots by Stiles increased the Lions' lead to eight points, 21-13, at the 11:55 mark.
The Spartans drew within one point on Marcus Clarke's trey at 8:42, but Penn State Altoona again bounced back and went on a 9-2 run.
Free throws late in the period by Austin Griffith (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) and John Brennan (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann-Goretti), along with a pair of baskets from Moyer, helped the Lions to a 41-29 halftime lead.
Moyer connected on a three to open the second half and put his team ahead by 15 points.
But D'Youville awoke and reeled off a 12-0 run, capped by Oliver Prince's fastbreak dunk at 16:08, to get back into the game.
Prince's layup at 12:15 narrowed the home team's deficit to 54-53, and Jon Gemerek's score shortly thereafter gave D'Youville its first lead since early in the first half.
Stiles helped the Lions reclaim the lead at 9:17, cashing in with a fastbreak layup to make it 60-59. Gehret's layup just over a minute later gave Penn State Altoona a 62-59 lead.
Harvin's jumper at the 3:00 mark increased his team's advantage to four points, 78-74. Brennan hit a shot and added a free throw at 2:03, and Michael Wigfield (Flinton, PA/Glendale) scored at 1:43 to provide his team with an eight point cushion.
Penn State Altoona was able to overcome its 23 turnovers by playing strong defense, particularly in the first half when the Lions limited the Spartans to a 39.3% field goal percentage.
The win snaps a four-game losing streak for Penn State Altoona.
