Grove City Hangs On to Defeat Lions 63-60

1/14/2013 — GROVE CITY, Pa. - Grove City College overtook a Penn State Altoona lead midway through the second half and held on in the closing minutes to secure a 63-60 win over the Lions in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Grove City College Arena.

The Lions saw leads of eight and seven points vanish, as the Wolverines made several key shots down the stretch to take the lead and maintain it.

Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) scored 13 points to go along with eight rebounds and four blocks for Penn State Altoona. Gehret needs to block three shots to break the men's basketball program's all-time record for blocks.

Durant Harvin (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) tied for the team lead in scoring and assists, scoring 13 and tallying five helpers.

Mitch Moyer (Port Matilda, PA/Bald Eagle) added 12 points, going 4-for-5 from three-point range.

John Brennan (Philadelphia, PA/St. John Neumann-Goretti) secured a game-high 10 rebounds and had five assists.

Grove City held a 7-2 lead at 14:57 after Joe Vermilya's three-pointer. But the Lions went on a 5-0 run to tie the game, culminating in Michael Wigfield's (Flinton, PA/Glendale) trey at 13:47.

Wigfield's layup at 6:17 put his team up 20-18. After Grove City responded with an Evan Schell three-pointer, Harvin connected from three-point land to put the Lions back on top, 23-21.

A Jordan Wells (Columbia, MD/Atholton) three at 3:35 broke a tie to put Penn State Altoona ahead 26-23.

But Grove City ended the half on a 9-2 run to lead 32-28 at the end of the first.

The Wolverines opened the second period with a Mitch Marmelstein layup, increasing their lead to 34-28.

But Penn State Altoona bounced back, going on a 10-2 run capped by Moyer's three-pointer at 16:41.

Gehret's layup and Jordan Stiles' (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) trifecta gave the Lions their largest lead of the game, 46-38, by the 11:48 mark.

After the Wolverines narrowed their deficit to 46-44 on Stephen Tam's three at 10:16, scores by Gehret and Moyer gave Penn State Altoona a seven point lead and a little more breathing room with 8:49 to play.

But Grove City swung the momentum back in their favor, ripping off a 12-0 run that ended with Brian Giesler's three-pointer to put the Wolverines ahead 56-51 at 5:42.

Gehret's jumper and Harvin's layup brought Penn State Altoona back to within one point at 4:03. But Nate Rambacher's foul shot and jumper put Grove City back up by four points.

Two minutes later, the Lions brought it back to within one point on Moyer's fourth three-pointer of the night. But Rambacher came up big again for the Wolverines, scoring a tip-in at 1:35 to make it a three point game.

Gehret's layup with 46 seconds left made it 61-60. But Rambacher answered for a third time, scoring on another tip-in with just 11 seconds to play. Grove City's defense held on a last second three-point attempt, surviving with a narrow victory.
