Baseball Opens Florida Schedule With Losses to St. John Fisher
3/2/2013 — WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Penn State Altoona baseball played its first games of the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational on Saturday afternoon, losing 4-3 and 9-5 to Saint John Fisher College at the Chain of Lakes Park Stadium.
St. John Fisher entered the weekend having received 20 votes in the most recent Top 25 Poll.
The Lions held a 3-0 lead in the first game, but the Cardinals rallied to force extra innings and plated the winning run in the eighth.
Penn State Altoona scored in the top of the first when Cody Swope (Robertsdale, PA/Tussey Mountain) reached base after being hit by a pitch and came around to score on a fielding error.
Jordan Swope (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) made it 3-0 in the third, driving in a pair of runs with his single to center.
The Lions appeared to be cruising until St. John Fisher got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth on Bryant Moore's RBI single down the right field line.
The Cardinals tied the game in the sixth. Ben Bostick led off the inning with a triple to center, then proceeded home on a wild pitch. Dave VanGorder's RBI double to right-center later in the frame tied the game 3-3.
After a scoreless seventh, the teams went into extras.
In the bottom of the eighth, Lions' miscues allowed St. John Fisher to get the winning run across. The Cardinals plated the game-winning run on a wild pitch which was part of a strikeout that would have been the third out of the inning. Earlier in the inning, a throwing error prevented an inning-ending double play.
Anthony Castelli (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro) tossed 5 1/3 innings for Penn State Altoona, giving up two earned runs and striking out four. Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona) pitched 2 1/3 and was saddled with the loss.
Jordan Swope and Matt Schmauder (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) each led the Lions at the plate with two hits.
After three scoreless innings opened game two of the doubleheader, Penn State Altoona made it 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Ken Terpack (Rennerdale, PA/Chartiers Valley) drove in a run with his RBI double to left-center. Later in the inning, he scored on a wild pitch.
But the Cardinals scored six in the top of the fifth. Bostick tied the game with a two-run triple to right, and his team added four more runs to go up 6-2.
The Lions got back two runs in the bottom half of the inning on Tyler Auerbeck's (Middletown, PA/Bishop McDevitt) two-run, pinch-hit single to left.
Cody Swope's sacrifice fly in the sixth pulled Penn State Altoona to within one run, 6-5.
But St. John Fisher scored three in the seventh, adding insurance to their lead and hanging on for the doubleheader sweep.
