Lady Lions Open Season With Pair of Losses in Myrtle Beach
3/4/2013 — MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Penn State Altoona softball began its 2013 schedule on Monday morning in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic, and the Lady Lions were defeated 2-1 by Malone University and 6-0 by Penn State Berks.
Jackie Smith (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) started at pitcher for Penn State Altoona against Malone, a Division II school. Smith pitched a complete game, going seven innings and allowing six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and a hit batter. She also recorded six strikeouts.
Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) gave the Lady Lions a lead in the first inning with one swing of the bat, clubbing a solo home run.
But Malone tied the game in the fourth and plated the go-ahead run in the sixth, then held on to clinch the win.
Penn State Altoona started Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) at pitcher in game two against Penn State Berks, and the Lady Lions received another strong start. DeArmitt worked six innings, giving up one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out six.
Berks led 1-0 going into the seventh inning, then added some padding to their lead by getting five runs across to make it 6-0.
Alamaria Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) and Gina Ricci (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) finished the day with two hits apiece, while Chambers, Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle), and Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) had one hit each.
