Softball Loses to Emory & Henry, Wins Against Rivier

3/5/2013 — MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Penn State Altoona softball won its first game of the season on Tuesday morning, splitting a pair of games in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The Lady Lions lost 6-2 to Emory & Henry College, then bounced back to win 8-0 over Rivier University.

Gina Ricci (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) led Penn State Altoona at the plate against Emory & Henry, going 2-for-2 with a walk and adding a stolen base. As a team, the Lady Lions collected eight hits in the game.

Penn State Altoona's offense awoke in game two, scoring eight runs on 12 hits to defeat Rivier in five innings via the mercy rule.

Jackie Smith (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) pitched a complete game shutout, allowing just two hits and giving up four walks while striking out three batters. At the plate, she went 3-for-4 to lead her team.

Clarissa Keller (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley), Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), and Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) each went 2-for-3. Stathes hit a solo home run during the third inning.
