Lady Lions Split Doubleheader at Penn State Behrend
4/6/2013 — ERIE, Pa. - Penn State Altoona softball posted a pair of comebacks in its Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Penn State Behrend on Saturday afternoon, but one game ended in triumph and the other was a loss in extra innings.
In game one, the Lady Lions defeated Behrend 5-4, scoring five unanswered runs over the last three innings to win.
Mirrissa Parker's two RBI single up the middle put Behrend on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second. Leah Griffin's groundout drew in another run to make it 3-0.
In the third, Kelly Hedderick's solo home run to left extended her team's lead to 4-0.
But Penn State Altoona began to chip away at its deficit in the top of the fifth. Amanda Brennan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) led off the frame with a double and came around to score on Christina Stathes' (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) base hit. Stathes later scored on an error to make it 4-2.
Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) led off the sixth inning with a homer to left, her third long ball of the season, cutting the home team's lead to 4-3.
In the seventh, Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) came up with the decisive hit -- a two-run, pinch hit single up the middle to give the Lady Lions a 5-4 lead, their first of the afternoon.
Penn State Altoona forced Behrend to strand the potential tying runner in the bottom of the seventh, sealing a one-run win.
In game two, the Lady Lions' bats pounded out 15 hits, but the team wound up on the losing end.
After Behrend jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the bottom of the second, Penn State Altoona put three on the board in the top of the third. Clarissa Keller (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) got her team on the board with an RBI single to left. Brennan added a run-scoring sacrifice fly, and Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) drove in a run on her double to left to make it 5-3.
Behrend added a run to its lead in the bottom of the frame, scoring on a wild pitch for their sixth run of the game.
Chambers' RBI double and Glunt's run-scoring groundout brought the Lady Lions closer in the fourth, cutting the home team's lead to 6-5.
Penn State Altoona came up with another big hit in the seventh inning when Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) singled to shortstop, allowing Miller to score and tie the game 6-6.
The game advanced to extras, and it proved to be Behrend's turn to come up with a game-winning hit. Stacey Herzog's one-out RBI single down the left field line brought home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, giving her team a walkoff win and salvaging the doubleheader split.
