Lady Lions Defeat La Roche 12-7, 7-3 to Sweep Home Doubleheader

4/10/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona softball defeated Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe La Roche College 12-7 in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field, then won 7-3 in a rain-shortened game two.

Game two was suspended due to severe weather and darkness in the sixth inning with the Lady Lions ahead 7-3. It was later ruled a complete game by the AMCC.

In game one, Raychel DeArmitt's (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) two-run double in the bottom of the second inning put the Lady Lions on the scoreboard. She scored on a groundout later in the inning to make it 3-0.

La Roche tied the game in the top of the third, but Penn State Altoona countered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Clarissa Keller (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) singled up the middle to bring home one run, and Amanda Brennan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) made it 5-3 with her RBI double to left-center.

The Lady Redhawks tied the game again, putting two runs on the board in the fourth.

But Penn State Altoona came back with a five-run bottom of the fourth. Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) and Lauren Bove (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley), and Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) stole home. Brennan collected two more RBIs in her single up the middle.

Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) contributed an RBI sacrifice fly in the fifth, and DeArmitt hit her second home run of the season in the sixth -- a solo shot to left-center that made it 12-7.

DeArmitt also pitched a complete game for her team, striking out six batters in seven innings for the win.

In game two, pitcher Jackie Smith (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) went 5 1/3 innings and surrendered two earned runs, picking up the victory.

La Roche held a 3-0 lead after two and a half innings, but the Lady Lions rallied for four runs in the bottom of the third on a pair of two-run singles by Gina Ricci (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) and Summer Feathers (Altoona, PA/Altoona).

Penn State Altoona added three more runs to its lead in the fourth. Bove led off the frame with a triple and came home on Smith's RBI single to left. Chambers followed with a two-run home run to right-center, making it 7-3.

In the La Roche half of the sixth, umpires suspended play with one out and one runner on base.
