Softball Sweeps Franciscan 16-0, 11-1

4/12/2013 — STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Penn State Altoona softball swept Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Franciscan University on Friday afternoon, winning 16-0 and 11-1.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Hannah Jackson (Troy, PA/Troy) tossed a complete game shutout. In five innings, she allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out seven batters.

In the top of the first, two Franciscan errors allowed a pair of Penn State Altoona runs to score.

Lauren Bove (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) hit an RBI double in the second to make it 3-0.

The Lady Lions exploded for eight runs in the fourth, including a three-run home run by Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) and a two-run homer by Summer Feathers (Altoona, PA/Altoona).

A Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) two-run home run was part of a five-run fifth inning for Penn State Altoona, helping to invoke the run rule and end the game after five complete innings.

In game two, Penn State Altoona received another good start at pitcher, as Cassondra Ross (Port Matilda, PA/Bald Eagle) pitched a complete game victory. She went five innings, yielding one run on just two hits. She struck out two batters and did not issue any walks.

The Lady Lions went up 3-0 in the top of the second inning on a pair of Franciscan errors and an RBI groundout by Bove.

Becca Enedy (Portage, PA/Portage) singled and came around to score on a wild pitch in the fourth, giving Penn State Altoona a 4-0 lead.

After a Franciscan home run in the bottom of the fourth made it 4-1, the Lady Lions put seven on the board in the fifth to again put the run rule into effect and come away with a win.

Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led Penn State Altoona at the plate in the doubleheader with four hits, while Bove, Stathes, and Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) each added three hits apiece.

Bove finished the day with two doubles and tied for the team-high with four RBIs. Stathes also collected four RBIs in the wins.
