Lions Baseball Sweeps Medaille 4-2, 3-0 on Senior Day
4/20/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona baseball defeated Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Medaille College 4-2 and 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Stewart Athletic Field.
The doubleheader marked the team's Senior Day celebration, as pitchers Anthony Castelli (Morganville, NJ/Marlboro), Matt Gehret (Altoona, PA/Altoona), and Chris Keeler (Oxford, PA/Oxford), catcher/right fielder Matt Schmauder (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron), outfielder Ken Terpack (Rennerdale, PA/Chartiers Valley), and student coach Alex Reed (Wexford, PA/North Allegheny) were each recognized in a pregame ceremony.
Castelli pitched well as the game one starter, picking up his second victory of the season. He gave up just one earned run through six innings and struck out five batters.
Gehret pitched a scoreless seventh inning for his fourth save of the season.
After Medaille used a sacrifice fly to score a run in the top of the second inning, Penn State Altoona took a lead in the bottom of the third when Terpack hit a run-scoring sac fly and Tim Norris (Greensburg, PA/Hempfield) scored on a fielder's choice.
TJ Serba's RBI single through the left side in the fifth tied the game 2-2 for Medaille.
But Cody Swope (Robertsdale, PA/Tussey Mountain) helped the Lions get back on top in the bottom half of the inning, contributing an RBI single and later scoring on an error to make it 4-2.
In game two, Derek Totaro (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) earned his fourth win of the season on the mound, pitching a complete game shutout for Penn State Altoona. In seven innings, he allowed just four hits and did not issue any walks while striking out six batters.
The Lions took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Tyler Auerbeck (Middletown, PA/Bishop McDevitt) drove in a pair of runs with his double to deep center.
John Szmed's (Delmont, PA/Greensburg-Salem) RBI single to left-center in the fourth made it 3-0.
Jordan Swope (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) led Penn State Altoona in hitting with a 4-for-7 performance in the doubleheader.
