Lady Lions Win 10-9 in Game One, Fall 4-3 in Game Two at Medaille
4/21/2013 — BUFFALO, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona softball split an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with Medaille College on Sunday afternoon, prevailing 10-9 in game one before losing 4-3 in game two.
Game one proved to be a high-scoring affair, as both teams combined for 19 runs on 25 hits.
Penn State Altoona got off to a strong start, putting three runs on the board in the top of the first, thanks to a Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) RBI double and an Amanda Brennan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) two-run single.
Medaille scored a run in the bottom of the first, then added two more in the second to tie the game 3-3. In the third, Alissa Emerson's sacrifice fly gave the Lady Mavericks a 4-3 lead.
The home team boosted its lead to 8-3 in the fourth, helped by Nicole Gulisano's two-run triple.
But Penn State Altoona responded with five runs in the sixth inning. Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) brought home two runs with her double before Clarissa Keller (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) plated two more with a single. Lauren Bove's (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) RBI triple capped off the scoring in the frame, tying the game 8-8.
The Lady Lions climbed ahead 9-8 in the seventh when Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) hit her third home run of the season.
But Medaille's Kiera Diana answered with a solo homer of her own in the bottom half of the seventh, tying the game and forcing extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Bove's RBI double put her team back on top, 10-9. Penn State Altoona got a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth to seal the win.
In the second game of the twinbill, Bove put the Lady Lions up 2-0 in the top of the second with her two-run single.
Brennan's RBI base hit in the fifth made it 3-0.
But Medaille rallied to plate four runs in the bottom of the sixth, and the Lady Mavericks closed out the game with a one run victory.
The Lady Lions were led at the plate by Bove and Glunt. Bove posted a 4-for-9 performance, hitting a double and a triple to go along with four RBIs and a run scored. Glunt went 4-for-8 with three runs scored, a double, and a solo homer.
