Softball Splits Important Doubleheader at D'Youville
4/22/2013 — WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona softball came away with a split in an Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader with D'Youville College on Monday afternoon at Northtown Center. The Lady Lions were handed a walkoff 6-5 loss in game one before bouncing back to win 2-1 in nine innings in the nightcap.
The doubleheader had significant AMCC Tournament hosting implications. After the split, Penn State Altoona is 12-4 in the conference, which currently ranks them second behind the 13-3 record of Pitt-Bradford. The Lady Lions will host Pitt-Bradford on Saturday, April 27 at 1:00 PM for the teams' final AMCC games of the regular season. A Penn State Altoona sweep would likely secure them the #1 seed in the conference and allow them to host the AMCC Tournament at Stewart Athletic Field on May 3-5.
In game one, the Lady Lions held a 5-2 lead in the seventh but were overcome by a D'Youville rally.
Jackie Smith (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) went six innings and allowed only one earned run while striking out seven batters in a no decision.
Kelly Chambers' (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) RBI single in the top of the first put Penn State Altoona on the board.
In the bottom half of the inning, D'Youville tied the game on MacKenzie Kehlenbeck's solo home run.
Smith helped her own cause in the second with a bases-clearing double, plating three runs to give the Lady Lions a 4-1 lead.
A bases loaded walk allowed the Lady Spartans to get a run back in the bottom half of the inning.
The teams went scoreless for the next four innings before Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led off the seventh with a home run to add to her team's lead, making it 5-2.
But D'Youville surged back in the bottom of the seventh. Sara Persutti's sacrifice fly brought in a run to make it 5-3 before Ashey Covel's two-out, three-run double gave the Lady Spartans a walkoff win.
In game two, the Lady Lions pulled out an extra innings win to salvage a split in the doubleheader.
The team received another strong starting pitching performance, as Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) tied a Penn State Altoona softball single game high by recording 14 strikeouts. She pitched nine innings and allowed just one run in her complete game victory.
Brittany Smith's (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) RBI single in the top of the third broke a scoreless tie to make it 1-0.
But D'Youville evened the score in the bottom of the sixth on Kehlenbeck's RBI base hit.
In the top of the ninth, Penn State Altoona took a 2-1 lead when Stathes scored on a passed ball, and the Lady Lions held D'Youville scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win.
