Lions Drop Doubleheader at Waynesburg
4/23/2013 — WAYNESBURG, Pa. - Penn State Altoona baseball lost a pair of games to non-conference opponent Waynesburg University on Tuesday afternoon, falling by scores of 11-9 and 9-8.
In game one, the Lions plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 lead when Cody Swope (Robertsdale, PA/Tussey Mountain) and Ken Terpack (Rennerdale, PA/Chartiers Valley) scored on an error.
But Waynesburg responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first to climb ahead 7-2.
Terpack scored on a wild pitch in the fourth, cutting the Yellow Jackets' lead to 8-3.
Penn State Altoona tied the game 8-8 by scoring five runs in the fourth. Jordan Swope's (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) single to first base brought a run home ahead of Terpack's RBI single and Cody Swope's run-scoring double. John Szmed (Delmont, PA/Greensburg-Salem) drove in two more runs with his double to left.
After Waynesburg put two runs on the board in the fifth to go ahead 10-8, Terpack hit a solo home run in the sixth to narrow the score to 10-9.
But the home team added an insurance run in the bottom half of the sixth and held on to take game one.
In game two, the Lions built a big lead, only to see Waynesburg come from behind to win in the bottom of the seventh.
Szmed's two-run double down the left field line opened the scoring for Penn State Altoona in the top of the first.
Cody Swope tripled to center in the third, bringing in one run. Szmed singled in Swope to make it 4-0.
Waynesburg scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, then got another in the fourth to cut Penn State Altoona's lead to 4-3.
But the Lions bounced back to score three runs in the fifth, extending their lead to 7-3. Brandon Clark (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe) drove in a run with his double down the left field line, and later in the inning, Szmed scored on a balk and Jeff Deveney (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) added an RBI groundout.
A Waynesburg error allowed Matt Schmauder (Ellicott City, MD/Mount Hebron) to score in the sixth, adding to the Lions' lead.
But up 8-3 in the seventh, Penn State Altoona could not hold its lead and surrendered six runs to the Yellow Jackets. The winning run came home on an error, allowing the home team to sweep the doubleheader.
Terpack's bat continued to be hot on Tuesday, as he went 4-for-6 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs while scoring seven runs.
Cody Swope led the squad in hits, going 5-for-8 with two doubles, a triple, two RBIs, and three runs scored.
Szmed posted a team-best five RBI on the day, hitting 4-for-8 with a pair of doubles.
