Lady Lions Sweep Pitt-Bradford to Claim AMCC Regular Season Title
4/27/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona softball sealed the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular season title on Saturday afternoon with a sweep of rival Pitt-Bradford at Stewart Athletic Field. The Lady Lions won both games by scores of 6-1 to finish the regular season with a league-best 14-4 conference record.
As the first seed heading into next weekend's AMCC Tournament, Penn State Altoona will host the three-day postseason tourney beginning on Friday, May 3 at Stewart Athletic Field.
In game one, Pitt-Bradford took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on Sydney Mosby's RBI single to center.
But starting pitcher Jackie Smith (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) and the Lady Lions shut down the visitors the rest of the way, allowing just two hits and no runs after the first inning.
Smith earned her 10th win of the season, pitching all seven innings and giving up just four hits, two walks, and one earned run.
Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) tied the game with an RBI double in the bottom of the first, and Christina Stathes (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) made it 2-1 with a two-out, run-scoring single.
Lily Glunt's (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) RBI hit up the middle gave the Lady Lions a 3-1 advantage.
Stathes came up with another two-out RBI in the fifth, singling to right field to make it 4-1.
A wild pitch and another RBI hit from Smith added some insurance to the Lady Lions' lead, and the team closed out the game with a 6-1 win.
Game two followed a similar template for Penn State Altoona, as the team relied on strong starting pitching and timely hitting.
Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) pitched a complete game, going seven innings and yielding just three hits and two walks. She struck out nine batters, and the only run she gave up was unearned.
Penn State Altoona took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second on back-to-back two-out hits. An RBI single from Gina Ricci (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) preceded Rebecca Enedy's (Portage, PA/Portage) run-scoring double to center.
In the third, Jackie Smith scored on an error, Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) drove in a run with her double to right, and Amanda Brennan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) added an RBI sacrifice fly to extend the Lady Lions' lead to 5-0.
Stathes' single off of the Pitt-Bradford pitcher in the fifth brought another run home, increasing the home team's advantage to 6-0.
A throwing error allowed the Lady Panthers to get onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, but Penn State Altoona stifled the opposition the rest of the way.
Stathes led the Lady Lions on the day with a 4-for-6, three RBI performance at the plate.
Brittany Smith, Jackie Smith, and Clarissa Keller (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) each had three-hit days for Penn State Altoona.
The AMCC Tournament schedule will be finalized early next week.
