Penn State Altoona Earns Championship Game Berth With Second Straight Comeback Win
5/4/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - #1 seed Penn State Altoona softball earned a slot in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championship with a 3-2 comeback win over #2 seed D'Youville College at Stewart Athletic Field on Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Lions will face a to-be-announced team for the conference title on Sunday at 10:00 AM. A win would wrap up the championship for Penn State Altoona; a loss would force a rematch game to decide the title because of the tournament's double elimination rules.
Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) started at pitcher on Saturday and picked up the win, going all seven innings and striking out five batters while allowing just two runs.
MacKenzie Kehlenbeck's home run in the top of the third inning gave D'Youville a 1-0 lead.
Jackie Smith's (Hollidaysburg, PA/Hollidaysburg) sacrifice fly knotted the score 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning.
Lauren DeVantier's two-out RBI single to right in the seventh gave the Lady Spartans a 2-1 advantage, but Penn State Altoona came up with a game-winning rally for the second time in the tournament.
Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) singled on a hard shot to the shortstop to tie the game 2-2, and a D'Youville throwing error allowed the winning run to come home and give Penn State Altoona a walkoff victory.
Jackie Smith and Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) each had two hits to lead the Lady Lions at the plate.
