Lady Lions Fall 5-1 to Top-Ranked Salisbury in NCAA Tournament Opener
5/9/2013 — SALEM, Va. - Penn State Altoona softball was defeated 5-1 by Salisbury University, the #1 ranked team in the nation, in the opening game of the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex on Thursday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lady Lions will play in an elimination game on Friday, May 10 at 10:00 AM against Roanoke College.
Penn State Altoona was limited to just three hits by Salisbury's starting pitcher, Rachel Johnson. In six innings of work, Johnson surrendered just one unearned run while recording eight strikeouts to pick up her 23rd win of the season.
The Seagulls came up with several big hits in two-out situations to put runs on the board.
With two outs in the bottom of the first, Katie Sebbane made it 2-0 with her two-run single to shallow right field.
Lindsay McCabe's RBI base hit up the middle in the third increased Salisbury's lead to 3-0.
The Seagulls struck again with two outs in the fourth on Michelle Gravdahl's RBI single to center.
The Lady Lions got onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. Lauren Bove (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) put down a bunt and reached on a throwing error, moving up to third on the play. One batter later, Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) delivered a single to left center to score Bove and cut Salisbury's lead to 4-1.
But the Seagulls got the run back in the bottom half of the inning on Hannah Mills' RBI double.
Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) had two of the Lady Lions' three hits. Smith went 1-for-3 with the lone RBI.
