Women's Volleyball Edged by Gettysburg, Bridgewater on Friday
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's volleyball lost a pair of tight matches to open their 2013 schedule on Friday in the Gettysburg College Battlefield Classic at the Bream Gymnasium.
The Lady Lions began their day with a 3-2 loss to Gettysburg. Penn State Altoona won the first two sets 25-20 and 25-18 before the home team stormed back to win the last three sets 25-20, 25-11, and 15-12.
Mariah McDowell (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) led all players with 19 kills and finished with a hitting percentage of .317. She also had 19 digs, one solo block, and four block assists.
Emily Baker (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) and Emily Frye (Etters, PA/Red Land) tied for the team lead in digs with 25 each.
Kristi Batzel (Osterburg, PA/Chestnut Ridge) put up 38 set assists.
Later that evening, Penn State Altoona was edged 3-2 by Bridgewater College, losing 15-25, 25-20, 14-25, 26-24, 2-15.
McDowell again led her team with 13 kills and had a hitting percentage of .400.
Batzel tallied 28 set assists and three service aces, and Baker had 23 digs and three aces.
The team resumes play on Saturday against Dickinson College and Gallaudet University, beginning at 12:00 PM.
