Lions Upended 2-0 in Home Opener Against Frostburg
9/17/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's soccer hung with Frostburg State University on Tuesday night in the Lions' home opener at Spring Run Stadium, but the visitors ultimately prevailed 2-0 on a pair of second half goals.
Frostburg entered Tuesday's contest with four wins in their first five games of the 2013 season, but Penn State Altoona played the Bobcats tightly throughout the game.
After the first half, the teams were even on the scoreboard (0-0) and in the category of total shots attempted (5-5).
But Frostburg opened things up in the second half, outshooting the Lions 8-1 and creating some offense.
Alex Brainard registered the first goal of the game for the Bobcats at 52:04 when he got control of the ball at the right edge of the penalty box and floated a shot over the keeper and into the net.
Frostburg doubled its lead at 80:14 when Brandon Rodgers scored on a shot in the midst of a scramble in front of the goal.
Aaron Ballish (Apollo, PA/Kiski) made five saves for Penn State Altoona, helping to keep his team in the game for much of the night.
