Lady Lions Keep Surging, Sweeping Chatham 3-0
9/25/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's volleyball lifted its record above .500 for the first time in over a year with a 3-0 win over non-conference opponent Chatham University on Wednesday night in the Adler Gym.
The Lady Lions improved their record to 8-7 with the victory, which is the team's fifth in a row. The last time the team had a winning overall record was after they won their season-opening match on August 31, 2012.
Penn State Altoona held on to win the first set 25-21 over Chatham, then cruised to 25-12 and 25-8 wins in the next two sets.
Mariah McDowell (Morrisdale, PA/West Branch) led all players with 14 kills. Amanda Hammer (Greencastle, PA/Greencastle-Antrim) added nine kills.
Kristi Batzel (Osterburg, PA/Chestnut Ridge) totalled a match-high 26 set assists for the Lady Lions.
Emily Frye (Etters, PA/Red Land) had 12 digs to lead all players, while Emily Baker (Lewisberry, PA/Red Land) contributed 10.
Becky Britton (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) tallied seven kills and a match-high six service aces.
Penn State Altoona will look to continue its momentum into this Saturday's Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opener, when the team faces Medaille College and Penn State Behrend in Erie, Pa.
