Lions Cross Country Dominates All-Conference Awards
11/14/2013 — PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Penn State Altoona men's cross country had a big presence in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's All-Conference Team, which was released on Wednesday. Jason Anna (Slippery Rock, PA/Slippery Rock) was named Co-Runner of the Year, Nathan Repetz (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) earned the conference's Newcomer of the Year honor, and Matt and Heidi Manfred were recognized as Coaches of the Year. The team also placed a total of four runners on the All-Conference squad.
Anna ran in all eight 8K races for Penn State Altoona in 2013, recording the best time on the team in six of them. The sophomore posted a record-setting performance in the AMCC Championship on November 2, setting a new Lions record in the 8K with a time of 26:28 to place second out of 92 runners. He won AMCC Men's Runner of the Week awards three times during the season, the most of any individual runner in the conference. Anna shares the Runner of the Year recognition with Denis Lydon of Penn State Behrend.
The freshman Repetz emerged as a strong runner for Penn State Altoona early in the season, leading the squad in the Behrend Invitational on September 14 with a time of 26:54.7. He was also the Lions' top runner in their season finale, the ECAC Division III Championship on November 9, with a time of 27:23.21. In the AMCC Championship, he placed third with a season-best time of 26:36. In total, Repetz raced in all eight events for his team.
The Manfreds earn their first Coaches of the Year award for men's cross country after winning that status in 2011 for the women's team. In 2013, they helped the Lions finish as runners-up in the AMCC Championship while also guiding the team to strong placements in the other seven races. The Manfreds have been head coaches of both the men's and women's cross country teams at Penn State Altoona for six years.
Named to the All-Conference Team in men's cross country, which is comprised of the top 15 finishers in the AMCC Championship, were Anna, Repetz, Jacob Dean (Shade Gap, PA/Southern Huntingdon), and Tyler Hatton (Raleigh, NC/North Raleigh Christian).
After Anna and Repetz's second and third place finishes in the AMCC Championship, Dean secured eighth place, finishing in 27:15, while Hatton was 14th, crossing the finish line at 27:49.
Dean, a sophomore, ran in all eight of the Lions' 8K races in 2013. His AMCC Championship time was the best in his two years with the program.
Hatton, a freshman, also posted his personal best time in the AMCC Championship. He competed in seven races for Penn State Altoona this season.
