Lady Lions Downed by Virginia Wesleyan in UMW Tournament Consolation Game
11/16/2013 — FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Penn State Altoona women's basketball lost 82-43 to Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the University of Mary Washington Hampton Inn South Tipoff Tournament in the Anderson Center.
Courtney Becker (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Lady Lions with 17 points and eight rebounds. After the game, she was named to the All-Tournament Team for her performance in Friday and Saturday's games.
Madison Mossellum (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) and Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) added seven points each for Penn State Altoona.
The Lady Lions struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 6-for-25.
Virginia Wesleyan opened the game on an 11-0 run, capped by Kerri-Leanne Taylor's layup at 16:36.
Becker's free throw at 14:32 marked the first points of the game for Penn State Altoona. At 8:38, her layup narrowed Virginia Wesleyan's lead to 25-12.
But the Marlins ripped off a 27-4 run from that point. Their three consecutive three-pointers by Andrea Paphites, Molly Barnes, and Cassie Conley made it 42-16 with 1:27 until halftime.
Virginia Wesleyan expanded its lead to as much as 39 points in the second half.
Turnovers again proved to be a thorn in the side of Penn State Altoona, as they committed 27 as a team which led to 33 points for the Marlins.
