Lady Lions Lose Double Overtime Heartbreaker 84-78
12/1/2013 — MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's basketball fell 84-78 to non-conference Penn State Harrisburg in a double overtime game on Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Lions erased a 14-point halftime deficit, storming back to tie the game and force two overtime periods. But Harrisburg rallied in the second overtime to pull out the win.
Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) posted a double-double for Penn State Altoona, scoring 11 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. She added three assists and blocked one shot.
Madison Mossellum (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) led the Lady Lions with 14 points and had six rebounds, three assists, three blocks, and three steals.
Nicole Gripp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) scored 13 and led the squad with five assists.
Kylie O'Toole (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) added 12 points, nine rebounds, and three assists and led the team with seven steals.
Harrisburg opened the game on a 10-3 run, then continued to build their advantage throughout the first half.
Miranda Zeanchock's layup and foul shot at 6:28 put the home team up 27-12. Rachel Moyer's score at 2:48 extended her team's lead to 37-16.
Penn State Altoona built some momentum before halftime, though, outscoring Harrisburg 9-2 in the closing 2:40. Mossellum's layup with six seconds left cut her team's deficit to 39-25.
The Lady Lions started the second half with three baskets to pull to within eight points. Devin Stessney's (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) layup at 16:51 made it 39-31.
Harrisburg bounced back, going up by as many as 15 points at the 8:50 mark when Ana Edmondson's score made it 52-37.
But Penn State Altoona erupted on a 22-7 run through the end of the half to tie the score.
Baskets by Corrigan and O'Toole cut into Harrisburg's lead, narrowing the score to 54-47 by 5:43.
O'Toole's layup at 4:14 brought her team to within four points, 55-51. Less than a minute later, Gripp's three-pointer made it a two point game.
At 2:13, Penn State Altoona tied the game at 56 on a layup by O'Toole. After the teams exchanged free throws down the stretch, they found themselves knotted 59-59 at the end of regulation.
Back-to-back scores by O'Toole and Mossellum helped the Lady Lions get off to a good start in overtime.
But a 9-0 run by Harrisburg put the home team back on top. Kiara Carter's layup at 3:26 tied the score 63-63, and Kaitlyn Carmo's three-point play a minute and a half later gave her squad a 68-63 advantage.
Penn State Altoona struck back with a 7-2 run, tying the game 70-70 when Courtney Becker (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) made a layup with 21 seconds left in the period.
Several seconds later, Becker put her team up by two with another score, but Harrisburg tied the game 72-72 as time expired, forcing a second overtime.
After a Carmo layup put Harrisburg up 74-72 six seconds into the period, Allison Edwards (Williamsburg, PA/Williamsburg) helped her team crawl back into the lead by hitting three foul shots during the next 47 seconds.
But Harrisburg responded with a 10-3 run, building a six point lead and claiming victory.
Penn State Altoona posted a strong effort defensively, forcing 47 turnovers by Harrisburg. The Lady Lions limited the home squad to a 19.2% field goal percentage during the second period, when they overcame Harrisburg's lead.
