Lady Lions Get First Win, Topping Hilbert 71-66
12/7/2013 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's basketball put a tick in the win column for the first time this season on Saturday when they defeated Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Hilbert College in the Adler Gym.
Courtney Becker (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) tied for the team lead in scoring with 15 points each.
Madison Mossellum (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) added 13 points for the Lady Lions.
Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) led all players with 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Penn State Altoona nursed a modest lead through the opening minutes of the first half before padding it in the latter portion of the period. Stessney connected from three-point range at 7:07 to give the Lady Lions a 33-22 lead. Daijanae Greene (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) scored a fastbreak layup at 6:25, and Corrigan and Stessney followed with scores to increase their team's advantage to 39-22.
The Lady Lions kept their double digit lead early in the second half. A pair of layups by Becker made it 45-32 by 16:05.
But Hilbert rattled off a 20-8 run, closing the gap to one point with 8:38 left in the game when Natalie Whitman scored to make it 53-52.
But Penn State Altoona responded with an 11-3 run, giving themselves a little more breathing room on the scoreboard. Corrigan's basket at 5:56 put her team up 64-55.
Corrigan secured several big rebounds in the closing minutes, helping her team hang on to record the win.
The Lady Lions overcame an 8-for-24 performance at the free throw line but managed to win the turnover battle 27-18.
