Buzzer Beater Breaks Lady Lions' Hearts in 67-65 Loss to Penn State Behrend

1/12/2014 — ERIE, Pa. - A buzzer-beating basket by Brianna Bayly gave Penn State Behrend a 67-65 win over the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team on Sunday afternoon in the Junker Center.

The Lady Lions fought back from a second half deficit to tie the game with 48 seconds left, but they were unable to come up with a decisive score, setting up Bayly's last-second shot.

Courtney Becker (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) led Penn State Altoona with 20 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

Kylie O'Toole (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) added nine points and five rebounds, and Madison Mossellum (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) scored eight points to go along with six rebounds and five assists.

Behrend took control of the game early in the first half. Natalie Corso's three-pointer at 12:37 put her team up 15-4, and Ally Burke converted on a three-point play at 11:45 to increase the lead to 18-4.

But Penn State Altoona awoke and got back into the game, going on a 15-6 run over the next seven minutes. Two jumpers by Rebecca Stunz (Reading, PA/Antietam) cut Behrend's lead to six points by the 5:31 mark, and Brittany Boslet's (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) trey at 4:40 capped the run to make it a five point game, 24-19.

Behrend finished the half on a strong note and held a 35-25 lead by the intermission. The home team continued its momentum into the second half. Layups from Brittany Kiger and a three-pointer by Emily Foy helped Behrend build a 14 point lead, 51-37, with 12:52 on the clock.

The Lady Lions continued to hang around, however, and climbed back into the game. Daijanae Greene (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) scored a layup at 9:12 to narrow her team's deficit to 53-48. Moira Corrigan's (Havertown, PA/Haverford) score at 4:47 made it a three point game before Becker's layup and foul shot at 3:40 tied the game 58-58.

Baskets by Corrigan and Becker helped Penn State Altoona keep the game tied over the next several minutes, including Becker's three-pointer with 48 seconds left that made it 65-65.

The Lady Lions took possession of the ball with 28 seconds remaining and had several opportunities to put the potential game-winning points on the scoreboard, but they were unable to capitalize and allowed Behrend to reclaim possession of the ball with six seconds left.

Behrend took the ball the length of the court, and Bayly put up a shot that rattled into the hoop as time expired.
