Lady Lions Bested 70-59 by Mount Aloysius
1/15/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's basketball could not find its rhythm against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Mount Aloysius College on Wednesday night in the Adler Gym, losing 70-59 to the Lady Mounties.
Madison Mossellum (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) led Penn State Altoona with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Nicole Gripp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) added eight points and a game-high five assists for the Lady Lions, and Daijanae Greene (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) and Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) finished with six points apiece.
For much of the first half, the teams jockeyed for position on the scoreboard, and neither squad held a significant lead.
Greene's jumper at 15:33 helped Penn State Altoona go up 9-8, but the Lady Lions' lead was short-lived, as Lindsy Sammarco answered with a three-pointer 26 seconds later to put Mount Aloysius up 11-9.
Brittany Boslet's (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) three-pointer at 12:15 kept the Lady Lions' deficit to just one point, 14-13, as did Kylie O'Toole's (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) layup at 9:28 that made it 18-17.
Gripp capitalized on a fouled three-point attempt at 7:59, going to the line and sinking all three foul shots to tie the game at 20.
But Mount Aloysius went off on what proved to be a decisive 20-2 run. Olivia Rupp's fastbreak score with 42 seconds to go before halftime gave the visitors a 40-22 lead.
Layups from Becky Bard and Lauren Gross helped the Lady Mounties lead by 20, 47-27, at 18:02 of the second half.
When Mount Aloysius' shooting cooled off in the second half, Penn State Altoona attempted to close the gap. Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) scored a layup at 10:20 to make it a 10 point game, 52-42. Stessney's three-pointer at 7:22 made it 56-48.
But the Lady Lions were unable to get any closer, as Mount Aloysius maintained its lead throughout the rest of the contest.
