Strong Defense Propels Lady Lions to 66-56 Win Over D'Youville

1/18/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - A solid defensive effort by the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team was key in a 66-56 win over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College on Saturday in the Adler Gym.

The Lady Lions limited D'Youville to a 24.6% field goal percentage throughout the game, allowing only 15 shots made from the floor.

Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) was strong in the paint, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking six shots to lead all players in both categories.

Madison Mossellem (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) added 14 rebounds for the Lady Lions to go along with 10 points and five assists. The double-double was the freshman's third of the season.

Nicole Gripp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) led her team in scoring with 14 points while securing five rebounds.

Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) contributed nine points and four rebounds for Penn State Altoona, while Brittany Boslet (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) added eight points and four steals and Daijanae Greene (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) scored eight points to go along with four assists.

Courtney Becker (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) posted a line of eight rebounds, seven points, and four assists.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a lead early in the first half. Mossellem's layup at 18:27 gave Penn State Altoona an 8-2 lead. Consecutive scores by Stessney, Mossellem, and Greene made it 20-12 by the 11:09 mark. Stessney's three-pointer at 5:35 upped her team's lead to 27-17.

Mossellem's layup and Boslet's jumper preceded halftime, giving Penn State Altoona a 36-21 advantage at the intermission.

Penn State Altoona continued to grow its lead early in the second half. A layup from Becker at 16:21 made it a 19 point game, and Gripp's trey just under a minute later put her team up 46-24. Jump shots courtesy of Boslet and Gabrielle Pizur (Northern Cambria, PA/Northern Cambria) gave the Lady Lions their largest lead of the day, 50-26, with 13:24 on the clock.

D'Youville threatened to come back, whittling their deficit to as little as 12 points when Bridget Andrews hit a three-pointer at 9:47 to make it 50-38.

But Penn State Altoona controlled the game down the stretch, icing their third AMCC victory of the season.
