Lady Lions Keep Surging With 80-77 Comeback Victory at Franciscan
1/23/2014 — STEUBENVILLE, Ohio - Penn State Altoona women's basketball won its third straight game on Thursday afternoon, defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Franciscan University 80-77 at the Kuzma Court.
The victory improves the Lady Lions' AMCC record to 4-6. It was also the team's first win on the road this season.
Brittany Boslet (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) led all scorers with 26 points, the highest point total of her freshman career to date.
Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) added 18 points and eight rebounds, and Madison Mossellem (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) contributed 11 points.
Franciscan earned a modest lead midway through the first half. Lacey Huck's jumper at the 6:00 mark put the Lady Barons on top 20-14.
But Boslet cut Franciscan's lead in half with a three-pointer 21 seconds later. Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) and Corrigan made four foul shots over the next minute of play to give Penn State Altoona its first lead of the game, 23-22, at 4:22.
Boslet connected from three-point range twice more in the final 1:03 of the period, helping expand the Lady Lions' advantage to 38-26 at halftime. She followed that by hitting a trey 14 seconds into the second half to increase Penn State Altoona's lead to 15 points.
But the Lady Barons stormed back into the game. A three-pointer and jump shot from Dani Link narrowed the Lady Lions' lead to six points by 14:02. Katie Rhodes' three-pointer made it a four point game at 13:40, and Huck's layup and foul shot tied the game 52-52 at 12:13. Rhodes gave her team a 59-56 lead at 11:25 when she connected from beyond the arc.
But thanks to Boslet's hot hand, Penn State Altoona quickly climbed back on top. The freshman nailed back-to-back three-pointers to give the Lady Lions a 62-59 lead at 10:30.
Franciscan was not finished, however, battling back to go ahead 65-64 at 8:39 on Iliana Gonzales' four point play, a trey and ensuing free throw. Just over a minute later, the Lady Barons connected on another three-point attempt, as Helen Raines gave her team a 72-68 advantage.
With Penn State Altoona forced to rally yet again, Corrigan hit jump shots on consecutive possessions to tie the game 72-72 at 2:58. After Raines' free throw put the home team ahead by one, Mossellem hit from three-point land at 1:30 to put the Lady Lions back up by two, 75-73.
Gonzales and Corrigan traded free throws, with Penn State Altoona leading 77-75 with 55 seconds remaining. Boslet helped keep her team in front with three foul shots in the closing seconds, and the Lady Lions' defense held strong to prevent a last-second score.
