Game Slips Away From Lady Lions in 69-60 Loss to Mount Aloysius
2/12/2014 — CRESSON, Pa. - A late six point lead in favor of the Penn State Altoona women's basketball team evaporated Wednesday night in the Athletic Convocation Center, as Mount Aloysius College rallied for the 69-60 win.
Brittany Boslet (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) led the Lady Lions in scoring with 11 points.
Courtney Becker (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) added nine points and eight rebounds, Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) had nine points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) contributed nine points and five rebounds.
The Lady Lions' offense was sluggish early in the first half, and Mount Aloysius took advantage by building a 15-5 lead by the 13:20 mark. Becky Bard's fastbreak score capped her team's game-opening run.
But Penn State Altoona awoke soon thereafter, going off on a 17-2 run to take the lead. Boslet's three-pointer and Corrigan's layup made it a two point game, 15-13, by the 11:09 mark. Nearly two minutes later, Daijanae Greene's (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) jumper cut Mount Aloysius' lead to 17-16, and back-to-back layups by Becker gave the Lady Lions a 20-17 lead by 8:18. Another score from Becker increased her team's lead to five, 22-17, at 6:57.
But the momentum shifted, as Mount Aloysius outscored Penn State Altoona 17-9 through the remainder of the period. Three straight three-pointers from Becky Bard were key in the Lady Mounties taking a 28-22 lead by 4:29, and Ali Maruca's jump shot kept it a six point game, 30-24, at 1:54.
After coming within one point of the home team's lead but falling short late in the first half and early in the second half, Penn State Altoona finally reclaimed the advantage at 12:57 of the second period on Boslet's trey that was part of an 11-0 run by the Lady Lions. Becker's three-point play and Boslet's jumper increased their squad's lead to 51-44 by 10:14, and a layup by Madison Mossellem (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) at 8:09 protected her team's seven point lead.
When a pair of three-pointers from Lauryn Colmer dug into Penn State Altoona's lead, a jumper from Kylie O'Toole (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) and three-pointer from Nicole Gripp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) helped keep the Lady Lions ahead 58-52 with 5:48 to play.
But the three ball proved to be too much for Penn State Altoona. Colmer connected from three-point range again at 3:50, and after a Lauren Gross layup, Maruca hit from beyond the arc at 2:57 to put Mount Aloysius back on top, 60-58.
O'Toole's free throws at 2:41 tied the game 60-60, but Mount Aloysius ended the game on a 9-0 run to cement their win.
