Lions Cruise Past D'Youville 88-78

2/15/2014 — BUFFALO, N.Y. - Evan Greening's (Stafford, VA/Stafford) 31 points and 18 rebounds powered the Penn State Altoona men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in an 88-78 victory over Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent D'Youville College.

Greening's 18 rebounds set a new personal-high. The freshman came two rebounds shy of tying Penn State Altoona's single game record for rebounds. The double-double performance was his team-leading 13th of the year and his seventh in a row.

Dylan Leazier (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) added 22 points for the Lions to go along with eight rebounds and four assists.

Jordan Smith (Pittsburgh, PA/Taylor Allderdice) contributed nine points and five rebounds off of the bench for Penn State Altoona, while Austin Griffith (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) and Javon Wilson (Washington, D.C./T.C. Williams) totaled eight points each.

Tay Charles (Chambersburg, PA/Chambersburg) dished out a game-high eight assists, and Michael Wigfield (Beaver Valley, PA/Glendale) led the team with three blocks.

Layups by Greening helped the Lions open the game with a 4-0 lead, and Wilson's fastbreak layup and three-pointer helped to increase his team's lead to 13-7 by 14:40.

D'Youville answered with a 14-2 run to lead by six. Conor Gallivan's layup at 10:11 tied the game at 15, and transition scores by Marcus Clarke and Jon Gemerek made it 21-15 by the 8:31 mark.

But Penn State Altoona outscored the Spartans 22-10 through the rest of the period. Leazier's three-point play at 5:36 knotted the score 21-21. Later, a tip-in by Griffith and a trey by Smith gave the Lions a 37-31 lead 1:03 before halftime.

The Lions continued to click offensively in the second half. Leazier opened the period with a three-pointer to make it a nine point game. Four minutes later, Greening converted on a three-point play, then hit a jump shot to make it 52-38 at 14:26.

The Spartans came to within six points of Penn State Altoona's lead at 5:43, when Gemerek's layup made it 72-66.

But the Lions bounced back, getting three layups by Griffith and a pair of foul shots from Leazier to make it a 14 point game again, 80-66, with 4:25 to play.

The victory gives Penn State Altoona the season sweep over D'Youville, as the Lions won the previous meeting with the Spartans 110-92 on January 18.
