Lady Lions' Rally Falls Short in 67-66 Loss at D'Youville
2/15/2014 — BUFFALO, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona women's basketball overcame a 14-point second half deficit on Saturday evening when they played Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe D'Youville College, but the Lady Lions could not hang on for the win, as the Lady Spartans got the slim 67-66 victory.
Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) posted her ninth double-double of the season, scoring 16 points to go along with 15 rebounds. Corrigan's rebound performance propelled her past former Lady Lion Heather Mielnik to move into second place on the program's single season rebounds list. Corrigan has 212 rebounds this season and needs 14 rebounds in her final two games to break Kim Ebersole's record of 225 from the 2002-2003 campaign.
Kylie O'Toole (Pittsburgh, PA/Penn Trafford) added 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists for the Lady Lions.
Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) scored 12 points and grabbed six rebounds, and Daijanae Greene (Englewood, NJ/Dwight Morrow) had 11 points and six assists.
Madison Mossellem (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) flirted with a triple-double, grabbing eight rebounds, leading the team with seven assists, and scoring six points.
After Corrigan's jumper at 10:02 that kept D'Youville's lead at 10-9, the Lady Spartans went on a 13-2 run to make it 23-11 with 5:23 left in the first half. Shannon Dougherty accounted for 10 of her team's points during that span.
Greene's three-pointer and jumper narrowed D'Youville's lead to five later in the period, and Mossellem's score at 2:13 brought Penn State Altoona to within 23-20.
But D'Youville expanded its lead early in the second half. A trio of three-pointers by Bridget Andrews helped the home team build a 49-36 advantage by 11:27, and Dougherty's trifecta at 10:43 gave the Lady Spartans their largest lead of the game, 54-40.
Penn State Altoona proved that it was not finished, however. O'Toole's fastbreak layup pulled her team back to within eight, 56-48, at 8:22. A layup and two free throws by Greene made it a five point game by 5:59, and Stessney's jumper 39 seconds later narrowed her team's deficit to 62-58. Scores by O'Toole tied the game 62-62 at the 3:11 mark.
The Lady Lions kept their momentum going when they took a 65-64 lead at 2:48 when Stessney connected from three-point range. A free throw by Corrigan at 2:11 made it 66-64, but Penn State Altoona went cold the rest of the way, as D'Youville shut them out during the remainder of the period.
Three foul shots was all the home needed to regain the lead by the 1:07 mark, and they held on in the closing minute to clinch the win.
