Lady Lions End Season With a Victory, Beating Behrend 68-55

2/22/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona women's basketball team capped its 2013-2014 season in victorious fashion on Saturday afternoon in the Adler Gym, defeating Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference rival Penn State Behrend 68-55.

The game also marked the team's annual breast cancer awareness event. From its efforts throughout the season, the women's basketball team raised over $2,000 for the fight against breast cancer, and a check was donated to the UPMC Altoona Foundation for Life during halftime.

Nicole Gripp (Tyrone, PA/Tyrone) led all scorers with 15 points while adding four rebounds and three assists.

Moira Corrigan (Havertown, PA/Haverford) scored 13 points for the Lady Lions while grabbing eight rebounds and blocking four shots. During Saturday's game, Corrigan passed former Lady Lion Kim Ebersole to set a new single season record for rebounds, finishing with 232. She also broke her own record for blocks in a season, setting a new one with 35. With the team's schedule completed, Corrigan has also established new single season records for rebounds per game (9.3) and blocks per game (1.7).

Madison Mossellem (Harrison City, PA/Penn Trafford) added 12 points, four rebounds, and four assists for the Lady Lions.

Penn State Altoona took an early lead, going up 12-7 at the 15:14 mark after Brittany Boslet's (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) three-pointer. That lead expanded to 14-7 on Gripp's fastbreak layup at 13:47.

Behrend made it a one-point game at 8:08 when Katie Carl's layup cut Penn State Altoona's lead to 16-15.

But the Lady Lions embarked on an 11-2 run to reestablish control of the game. Mossellem's layup at 2:50 made it 27-17.

After the visitors had narrowed their deficit to five points by halftime, Penn State Altoona expanded its lead in the early stages of the second half. Gripp's three-pointer at 18:15 put her team back up by 10, 32-22. Three-point plays by Corrigan and Boslet helped give the Lady Lions a 38-25 lead by 16:35.

Behrend kept hanging around and whittled its deficit to four points with 9:56 to play, narrowing the score to 46-42 on Brianna Bayly's layup. Bayly connected from three-point range at 4:54 to keep her team within five points of Penn State Altoona's lead, 56-51.

But the Lady Lions weathered the storm and hung on to the lead. Devin Stessney (Altoona, PA/Bishop Guilfoyle) answered Bayly's three-pointer with a trey of her own at 4:24. Later, Gripp's breakaway layup and Mossellem's jumper iced the game by giving Penn State Altoona a 64-51 lead with 53 seconds left in the game.
