BOX SCORE (GAME 1)
BOX SCORE (GAME 2)
4/6/2014 — ERIE, Pa. - Penn State Altoona baseball lost 6-3 and 11-0 in a doubleheader at Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Penn State Behrend on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, Logan Madill (Midland, MI/Midland) and Pat McHenry (Christiana, PA/Octorara) were each 1-for-3 with a run scored.
John Szmed (Delmont, PA/Greensburg-Salem) drove in two of his team's three runs.
Kurtis Krise (Woodland, PA/Clearfield) threw a complete game, pitching six innings for the Lions and giving up only two earned runs on four hits and three walks.
Behrend jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three complete innings. Ryan Finnegan's sacrifice fly and Brian Bohman's RBI single up the middle plated two runs for the home team in the bottom of the first. Tommy Kocur's RBI hit in the second made it 3-0, and Matt DiDiano's two-run double to right-center brought two more runs across in the third.
Penn State Altoona got on the board in the top of the fifth when Jeff Deveney (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) drew a one-out walk, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Szmed's groundout to shortstop.
The Lions made things interesting in the seventh. After Madill and McHenry led off the frame with back-to-back singles, Madill scored on a Szmed groundout and McHenry came home on a pinch-hit single by Joey Myers (Atglen, PA/Octorara). The team brought the potential tying run to the plate, but Behrend regrouped to wrap up the inning without allowing any further damage by Penn State Altoona.
In the nightcap, Penn State Altoona was held in check by Behrend starter Dante DeSantis, who allowed only two baserunners -- both reaching on hits -- in a complete game shutout, striking out five batters in his seven innings of work.
Jordan Swope (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) and Szmed had the Lions' only hits of the game.
Behrend again took an early lead, going up 2-0 in the bottom of the first on Bohman's two-run single to left-center. They plated five runs in the third, helped by a Penn State Altoona error, a passed ball, and DiDiano's two RBI base hit. The home team scored four more runs in the sixth to increase their lead to a commanding 11-0 advantage.
The Lions drop to 5-16 overall and 0-4 in the AMCC with today's losses. The team returns home this week to face another conference foe, La Roche College, for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 9. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
