Lions Snap Skid With Doubleheader Sweep of Hilbert
4/12/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona baseball broke a 10-game losing streak and earned its first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference wins of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Hilbert College 9-5 and 10-0 in a doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.
In game one, Pat McHenry (Christiana, PA/Octorara) was 3-for-3 with a home run and two runs batted in.
Jordan Swope (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) added a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, scoring two runs and collecting one RBI.
Kurtis Krise (Woodland, PA/Clearfield) picked up his first collegiate win on the mound, pitching six innings and striking out four batters while yielding only two earned runs.
Penn State Altoona took advantage of three Hilbert errors in the bottom of the first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Swope led off the frame with a base hit and later scored on an error. Logan Madill's (Midland, MI/Midland) sacrifice fly brought in another run, and McHenry's RBI single through the left side plated a third. Later in the inning, John Szmed (Delmont, PA/Greensburg-Salem) came home on an error to score his team's fourth run of the inning.
The Hawks responded with three runs in the top of the second inning to make it a one run game. Anthony Wurstner's bases-clearing, two-out double to left narrowed the visitors' deficit to 4-3.
Kevin Moore's RBI single to center in the third tied the game 4-4.
But the Lions regained the lead with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third, as McHenry led off the inning with a solo blast to left field that put Penn State Altoona up 5-4.
Hilbert fought back to tie the game again, coming up with a run in the sixth on Wurstner's RBI double to knot the score 5-5.
But once again, the Lions came back quickly to retake the lead. In the home half of the sixth, Swope and Nate Bennett (Monroeton, PA/Towanda) hit back-to-back RBI singles, and each player later scored on Hilbert errors to make it 9-5 by the end of the inning.
Bennett entered to pitch in the seventh and worked out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation. He struck out two batters in a scoreless inning of work, holding Penn State Altoona's four-run lead.
A stellar pitching performance from starter Jared Dailey (Boalsburg, PA/State College) headlined the nightcap, as Dailey notched his first collegiate win in a complete game, three-hit shutout of the Hawks. He struck out two while issuing no walks.
Jack Cleary (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) was 2-for-2 with four runs batted in and one run scored.
Bennett and Dan Bier (Lafayette Hill, PA/Archbishop Carroll) were also 2-for-2 in game two, scoring two runs each.
Cleary's sac fly in the bottom of the first made it 1-0, and he added another in the second inning to go along with RBI singles by Swope and Jeff Deveney (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg), increasing the Lions' lead to 4-0.
Cleary drove in two more runs in the fourth with his base hit to center, and McHenry got a run across with a sac fly to make it 7-0.
Penn State Altoona added three more runs in the sixth, when Cleary and Madill scored on Hilbert errors and Bier contributed a sac fly.
The doubleheader sweep, which was the Lions' first of the season, improves Penn State Altoona baseball's overall record to 7-19 and ups their AMCC mark to 2-6. The team hits the road to face another conference opponent, D'Youville College, tomorrow, Sunday, April 13, for a 1:00 PM twinbill.
