Lions Post Second Straight AMCC Doubleheader Sweep, Defeating D'Youville 10-6 and 8-0

4/13/2014 — WEST SENECA, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona baseball posted its second Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference doubleheader sweep in as many days, topping D'Youville College 10-6 and 8-0 on Sunday afternoon at Huesinger Field.

The Lions' power bats came through to push Penn State Altoona past the Spartans, as the team combined for five home runs on the day.

In game one, Pat McHenry (Christiana, PA/Octorara) was 2-for-4, including his first collegiate grand slam.

Jack Cleary (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) was 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

Ryan Robinette (Bedford, PA/Bedford) recorded his first collegiate win on the mound. The sophomore tossed a complete game, striking out six batters in seven innings.

Jordan Swope (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) led off the game with a walk and came around to score on an error to make it 1-0 after the top of the first inning.

Cleary's two-run single plated two runs in the third, increasing Penn State Altoona's lead to 3-0. Swope's two RBI double in the fourth upped his team's advantage to 5-0.

The Lions put together a five-run seventh inning to double their lead. Swope singled to lead off the frame and scored on another D'Youville error. Later in the inning, McHenry blasted a grand slam to left.

The Spartans awoke for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Lions held on to claim victory.

Penn State Altoona hit four of its five long balls in the second game of the doubleheader.

Cleary hit a two-run homer to left in the top of the first inning, and McHenry and John Szmed (Delmont, PA/Greensburg-Salem) went back-to-back with solo shots in the third.

The Lions also plated a run in the second inning on a Jeff Deveney (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) sacrifice fly.

Logan Madill (Midland, MI/Midland) added a solo homer in the fourth to make it 6-0, and Nate Bennett's (Monroeton, PA/Towanda) RBI groundout and Swope's run-scoring single in the fifth added two more runs to the Lions' total.

Mike Marley (Middletown, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) started at pitcher in the second game and earned his first collegiate victory, limiting D'Youville to three hits -- two of which were of the infield variety -- while striking out six batters in a complete game effort. The freshman issued just one walk and faced only 25 batters.

Penn State Altoona baseball has now won four games in a row. The Lions hold a 9-19 overall record and a 4-6 mark in the AMCC. The team hosts non-conference opponent Juniata College this Thursday, April 17 for a 1:00 PM doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field.
