Lady Lions Suffer Sweep to D'Youville
4/18/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - D'Youville College handed Penn State Altoona softball a sweep in Friday afternoon's doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field, as the Lady Spartans topped the Lady Lions 2-0 and 3-1.
Penn State Altoona was unable to solve D'Youville starting pitcher Kalie McHenry, who started both games and combined to throw 14 innings of one-run ball.
The Lady Spartans took an early lead in game one when Shannon Evans' two-out RBI single gave D'Youville a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. The visitors doubled their lead in the sixth on Ashley Colan's RBI base hit to right field.
The Lady Lions were unable to come up with the big hit, as they stranded eight runners without scoring any runs.
Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) took the loss despite a strong start in the circle. She pitched a complete game, striking out seven batters in seven innings and allowing the two D'Youville runs on seven hits and two walks.
Game two proved to follow the same storyline as the first game, as D'Youville received strong pitching and defense and came up with timely hits, while Penn State Altoona struggled to seize opportunities with runners on base.
Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) went 3-for-3 in the second game, while Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) batted 2-for-3 with a double. Those two players accounted for five of their team's six hits.
The Lady Lions finally broke through for a run in the bottom of the first inning when Clarissa Keller's (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) sacrifice fly to right scored Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) to make it 1-0.
But D'Youville tied the game in the top of the third on Lydia Monin's RBI hit up the middle. In the sixth, Mackenzie Kehlenbeck came up big for the Lady Spartans when she hit a two-run home run to right-center, putting her team ahead 3-1.
Kate Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) posted a solid performance at pitcher for Penn State Altoona, giving up three runs in a complete game effort. In seven innings, Burge allowed four hits and three walks while striking out six.
With the losses, Penn State Altoona softball falls to 21-8 overall and 10-4 in the AMCC. The Lady Lions return for another home conference doubleheader tomorrow, April 18, when they face Medaille College beginning at 1:00 PM. The date also marks the team's Senior Day.
