Baseball Extends AMCC Win Streak With Sweep of Medaille

4/19/2014 — BUFFALO, N.Y. - Penn State Altoona baseball made it six wins in a row against Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference teams on Saturday afternoon, when the Lions posted 10-5 and 20-8 victories over Medaille College.

The Lions have won seven of their last eight games overall and currently hold a 12-20 record, including a 6-6 mark in the AMCC.

In game one, Jeff Deveney (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) went 4-for-5 at the plate for the Lions. Logan Madill (Midland, MI/Midland) was 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in, and Pat McHenry (Christiana, PA/Octorara) and Jordan Swope (State College, PA/Tussey Mountain) were each 2-for-4.

McHenry started on the mound and went the distance, striking out seven batters in seven innings and holding Medaille to five runs to pick up his second win of the season.

After Cory Bukowski's RBI single put Medaille up 1-0 after one inning, McHenry helped his cause with a solo home run in the top of the second inning to tie the score.

The Lions put together a five-run fifth inning, including a three-run homer from Madill, to go ahead 6-1. Swope scored on a passed ball in the sixth to make it 7-1.

The Mavericks countered with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth to narrow the score to 7-5. Jake McNamara drew a bases loaded walk, and Kyle Powell and Travis Chavanne drove in three runs with their RBI singles.

But the Lions added some insurance in the seventh. After a Medaille error allowed one run to score, Swope added a sacrifice fly to bring another run in and Deveney brought a run across with his RBI double.

In game two, Penn State Altoona exploded for 20 runs on 17 hits.

McHenry was 3-for-3 with a double, four RBI, and three runs scored. Deveney batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Tyler Pastor (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) added a 3-for-5 performance with one RBI and one run scored.

Nate Bennett (Monroeton, PA/Towanda), John Szmed (Delmont, PA/Greensburg-Salem), and Swope each collected two hits in the game.

Jared Dailey (Boalsburg, PA/State College) earned his second win of the season, pitching a complete game. He allowed three earned runs in seven innings.

The Lions got RBI singles from Jack Cleary (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier), Szmed, and Bennett in the top of the first inning, as well as a two-run double from McHenry. Another run came home on an error, as Penn State Altoona plated seven runs in the frame.

Medaille came back with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, but Penn State Altoona blew the game open in the fourth when they scored 12 runs. Dan Bier (Lafayette Hill, PA/Archbishop Carroll) and Szmed had two RBI singles in that inning, and Swope added a two-run double.
