Lady Lions Sweep Pitt-Bradford in Last AMCC Games Before Postseason Tournament



4/27/2014 — BRADFORD, Pa. - Penn State Altoona softball topped Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference foe Pitt-Bradford 4-2 and 3-0 in a doubleheader on Sunday evening.

In game one, Amanda Brennan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) was 2-for-3 with a home run.

Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle), Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte), and Gina Ricci (Garnet Valley, PA/Garnet Valley) also had two hits each in the game one victory.

DeArmitt threw a complete game in the circle, yielding zero earned runs in seven innings of work.

The Lady Lions took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Brennan led off the frame with a home run to center, and DeArmitt added an RBI double down the left field line later in the inning.

Penn State Altoona doubled its lead in the fourth on Chambers' RBI single through the left side and Ricci's run-scoring single to third.

Pitt-Bradford picked up two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Lady Lions held their ground the rest of the way to earn the win.

In game two, Ricci was 2-for-2 with a run scored to lead her team at the plate.

Jessica Brennan (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) and Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) were each 2-for-3, and Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Kate Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) threw a complete game shutout, going seven innings and allowing no runs on four hits and four walks while striking out three batters.

After four straight scoreless innings to open the game, the Lady Lions finally broke through with two runs in the top of the fifth inning on Miller's RBI single to second and Smith's sacrifice fly to center.

Smith's RBI single to center in the seventh added an insurance run to Penn State Altoona's lead in the seventh, making it 3-0.

Penn State Altoona finishes the day at 26-9 overall, including a 14-4 AMCC record at the end of conference play. The Lady Lions host Penn State Abington, a non-conference opponent, this Wednesday, April 30 for a 3:00 PM doubleheader at Stewart Athletic Field to wrap up regular season play.
