Lady Lions Roar Back for Big Win Over Mount Aloysius in AMCC Tournament

5/2/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona softball overcame a sixth inning deficit to pull out a 12-4 win against Mount Aloysius College in the first day of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament at Penn State Behrend on Friday afternoon.

The #2 seed Lady Lions trailed their nearby conference rivals, #3 seed Mount Aloysius, 4-3 entering the bottom of the sixth inning. But Penn State Altoona opened things up and ended the game an inning early by plating nine runs to satisfy the eight-run rule.

Brittany Smith (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) led Penn State Altoona at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. She also drove in the game-tying run in the sixth.

Lily Glunt (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) had the decisive hit in the sixth, clearing the bases with a double to put the Lady Lions ahead.

Kelly Chambers (Snow Shoe, PA/Bald Eagle) was 1-for-3 with a solo home run and three runs scored. Amanda Brennan (Jefferson Hills, PA/Thomas Jefferson) was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

Penn State Altoona grabbed an early lead and appeared to be cruising to a low-scoring win.

The Lady Lions took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Smith scored on an error, and Brennan's RBI single through the left side plated her team's second run of the frame.

Mount Aloysius made it 2-1 in the top of the third on Lindsy Sammarco's two-out RBI double to center, but Penn State Altoona got that run back in the bottom half of the third when Chambers led off with a homer to left.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Mounties' offense -- which had produced just one hit to that point -- awoke to get three runs across on five straight two-out hits. Chelsea Engeholm and Jalisa Westover tied the game with RBI singles, and Hayley McGowan followed with a run-scoring hit up the middle to give Mount Aloysius its first lead of the game, 4-3.

But Penn State Altoona rallied in the sixth for a big inning. Smith tied the game with her RBI single to left, and Glunt followed with a three-run triple to deep center that put her team ahead 7-4. Clarissa Keller's (Spring Mills, PA/Penns Valley) RBI single to left center added to the Lady Lions' lead, and Ala Miller (Muncy, PA/Muncy) drew a bases-loaded walk to bring another run home. Three Mount Aloysius errors allowed three more Penn State Altoona runs to come across, giving the Lady Lions the eight-run lead needed to end the game.

Raychel DeArmitt (Bellefonte, PA/Bellefonte) started in the circle and threw 4 2/3 innings while striking out five batters in a no decision. Kate Burge (Philipsburg, PA/Philipsburg-Osceola) entered in relief, pitching 1 1/3 innings to pick up her 11th win of the season.

Penn State Altoona's next game is tomorrow, Saturday, May 3, against #4 Pitt-Bradford. The start time for the contest, which will be the third game of the day, will be approximately 1:00 PM.
