Women's Tennis Opens Season With 8-1 Loss to Division II Clarion, 5-4 Loss to Geneva
8/30/2014 — ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona women's tennis fell 8-1 to Division II opponent Clarion University and 5-4 to Geneva College in Saturday's tri-match at the Adler Tennis Courts.
Clarion swept doubles play by scores of 8-3, 8-3, and 8-1 before taking five-of-six singles matches.
Madison Caplan (Devon, PA/Conestoga) provided the lone point for the Lady Lions with an 8-2 triumph in No. 6 singles.
In their second match of the day, the Lady Lions played Geneva much closer than Clarion, but the Golden Tornadoes were able to edge Penn State Altoona for the one-point victory.
Penn State Altoona got off to a good start, winning two of the three doubles matches. The duo of Michelle Colucci (Middletown, NJ/St. John Vianney)/Regina Sanchez (Atizapan de Zaragoza, MX/IMG Academy) played to a 9-8 win in No. 1 doubles, while the team of Olivia Brown (Camp Hill, PA/Cedar Cliff)/Caplan posted an 8-2 win in No. 3 doubles.
But Geneva came back to win four singles matches to take home the victory.
Sanchez picked up an 8-1 win in No. 3 singles, and Caplan posted her second No. 6 singles win of the day with an 8-2 decision over her opponent.
Penn State Altoona women's tennis opens Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play next Friday, hosting Mount Aloysius College for a 4:00 PM match.
