Men's soccer wins in overtime at Franciscan

STEUBENVILLE, Oh. - Sophomore Geremy Graham (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) punched in the game-winning goal in the first minute of overtime, and the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team beat Franciscan University to remain undefeated in conference play Saturday afternoon.
Graham's score came off of a rare double-assist from local products Joe DeGol (Altoona, PA/Altoona) and Tim Morris (Altoona, PA/Altoona). The goal was Graham's fifth on the season, good for best on the team.
The Lions held a 2-1 halftime lead thanks to a Brinton Satterfield (Boalsburg, PA/State College) unassisted goal in the 15th minute, and a Ben Oswald (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) penalty kick in front of the box in the 25th minute. Oswald's penalty kick was his second of the season for Altoona.
Franciscan's first-half goal came from Thomas Allen at the 32:47 mark off of a Steven Duran assist, and Ryan Keogler helped the Barons tie the game at 2-2 in the 75th minute by also notching a goal.
The Lions held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks and out-shot Franciscan 10-8 in the match.
Altoona has rebounded form an 0-6-3 start with three straight Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference wins, and the team will return to action this Wednesday, Oct. 8, for a conference battle at La Roche College. Match time is set for 4:00 PM.
Men's soccer blanks Greensburg for second straight win

ALTOONA, Pa. - Freshman Ben Oswald (Selinsgrove, PA/Selinsgrove) scored his first collegiate goal off a penalty kick in the 20th minute, and the Penn State Altoona men's soccer team would add three more insurance tallies in a 4-0 rout of Pitt-Greensburg Tuesday evening at Spring Run Stadium.
Oswald's penalty score, which proved to be the game-winner came after sophomore Geremy Graham (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) was drug down in front of the box at the 20:58 mark.
Classmate Nick Giffen (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) recorded a 3-point game after assisting sophomore Dane Kelsey's (Muncy, PA/Muncy) goal in the 38th minute and scoring Altoona's third goal at the 58:47 mark.
Kelsey put the Lions on top 2-0 after heading home a Giffen corner kick. Giffen's tally came courtesy of junior Tim Morris (Altoona, PA/Altoona), who slipped a perfect pass to the front of the box.
The Lions added a late fourth goal when junior Richard Hopewell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) deflected a ball into the box that Graham punched in.
Altoona fired 17 shots, 10 on goal, compared to just six attempts by the Bobcats. The Lions also held a decisive 10-2 edge in corner kicks.
The physical affair saw a combined 36 fouls and two yellow cards assessed.
Penn State Altoona improved to 2-6-3 overall and 2-0 in Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference play. Next up for the squad is a trip to Franciscan University this Saturday, October 4, for a 3:00 PM match with the Barons.
Men's soccer picks up first win over Hilbert

HAMBURG, Ny. - The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team earned its first win of the 2008 season, blanking Hilbert College 3-0 in both squads Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference openers Saturday afternoon.
The Lions scored their first goal at the 15:50 mark courtesy of sophomore Joe DeGol (Altoona, PA/Altoona). Classmate Kevin Fee (Perkasie, PA/Lansdale Catholic) was credited with the assist.
Another sophomore, Tim Morris (Altoona, PA/Altoona) gave the visitors a 2-0 advantage in the 26th minute after converting a Geremy Graham (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East) feed.
Freshman Nick Giffen (Ashburn, VA/Stone Bridge) scored the game's final goal at the 73:34 mark.
Altoona out-shot the host Hawks 21-9 and attempted 12 shots on goal. Lion keeper Chris Bolea (Harmony Township, PA/Ambridge) continued his stellar play by turning away five shots while his counterpart Eric Davies made nine saves.
Penn State Altoona improved to 1-6-3 overall and 1-0 in AMCC play. The squad returns home this Tuesday, September 30, for a 7:00 PM match against Pitt-Greensburg at Spring Run Stadium.
Men's soccer earns tie in double-overtime against Grove City

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team ended it's 110 minute match against Grove City in a 0-0 tie Saturday night at Spring Run Stadium. For the fourth time this season, the Lions have taken their opponents to extra periods.
Freshman Chris Bolea (Harmony Township, PA/Ambridge) had a superb defensive game for Altoona, as he saved seven shots on the night, including five in the first half of regulation.
The Wolverines shot 16 times during the game, with seven of those on target. Altoona fired nine shots total, with only two of those attempts on goal.
After a week hiatus, Altoona travels to Hilbert College next Saturday to take on the Hawks. Match time is set for 3:00 PM.
Men's soccer falls to nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Penn State Altoona men's soccer team used an aggressive defensive first half to stay within striking distance of nationally-ranked Carnegie Mellon, but the Tartans eventually prevailed 1-0 Wednesday night at Spring Run Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Tartans claimed the first and only goal of the match shortly after intermission. Ricky Griffin punched in a pass from Keith Haselhoff in front of the box in the 50th minute of play.
This marked the first time in the program's eight-year history that the team has played three nationally-ranked opponents. The Lions opened the season against Montclair State and Johns Hopkins, both ranked in the top 15 at the time.
Altoona, which fell to 0-6-2 on the season, will play again at home this coming Saturday, Sept. 20 against Grove City College. Match time is set for 6:00 PM.
