Kelsey Receives NSCAA Academic Award

ALTOONA, Pa. - Dane Kelsey (Muncy, PA/Muncy) of Penn State Altoona men's soccer was named a Regional Scholar All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Kelsey, a Civil Engineering major, had a 3.75 GPA. He served as team captain in 2009, organized the men's soccer Walk for Dyslexia in September and was asked by University Relations to act as a blogger for the Penn State Altoona website.
Three Athletes Graduating This Month

ALTOONA, Pa. - Three Penn State Altoona student-athletes are graduating this month: Amy Cessna (Everett, PA/Everett) and Olivia Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) of women's volleyball and Richard Hopewell (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) of men's soccer.
Cessna and Hallahan ranked first and second on the volleyball team in blocks this past season with 113 and 61, respectively. Both regulars for the Lady Lions, they helped lead the team to a 17-15 overall record in 2009.
Hopewell battled back from an injury to play in the men's soccer team's final six games of the season, starting one. Known for strong defensive play, Hopewell was a part of the Lions' effort that limited opponents to three goals over the final six games of the 2009 season.
DeSteffano Named to All-Region Team

ALTOONA, Pa. - Penn State Altoona's Joe DeSteffano (Solebury, PA/New Hope-Solebury) was named third team NCAA Division III All-Great Lakes Region for men's soccer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
DeSteffano led the Lions with 12 goals in his freshman season. He was also named to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference's first team All-Conference for his achievements during the 2009 season.
AMCC Releases List of All-Sportsmanship Team

PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference released its All-Sportsmanship Team for 2009 fall sports.
The award is voted on by individual team members at each institution in the AMCC. The criteria states that "the student-athletes selected must consistently demonstrate a high level of ethical conduct, respect and fair play in both practice and competition, whether on the sidelines or as an active competitor. Such sportsmanship shall be evident toward teammates, coaches, opponents, officials and fans. He/She must also serve as a positive representative of school spirit when a spectator at other teams’ sporting events."
One player from each of Penn State Altoona's fall sports teams made the list.

Stevenson Advances Past Lions in Shootout

ALTOONA, Pa. - After playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods, Penn State Altoona men's soccer was bested in a shootout by Stevenson University in Wednesday afternoon's ECAC first round game at Spring Run Stadium.
Corey Suter (Mifflintown, PA/Juniata) scored on a corner kick from Dane Kelsey (Muncy, PA/Muncy) at the 21:00 mark of the first half to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
But Stevenson evened the score late in the second half when Sean Scarselletta scored on a penalty kick to make it 1-1.
After a pair of evenly-played overtime periods, the game proceeded to a shootout.
But Stevenson won the shootout 4-3, with the Mustangs' Ryan Pierce notching the deciding score to help advance his team in the ECAC tournament.
