Doug Simmons is a native of Altoona, PA and started playing tennis at an early age. He was a four-year member of the Altoona Area High School boys varsity tennis team from 1999-2003. During his time with the team, the squad competed in the PIAA Team Tennis State Championships twice, finishing in second place in 2002 and third in 2003.

Simmons graduated from Duquesne University with a degree in Education and English. After college, he accepted a full-time teaching position in the Altoona Area School District. He has been an assistant coach for the AAHS boys and girls tennis teams for five years under head coach Eric Hovan.
